Canadian-American composer Evan Johnson (b. 1998) strives to create music that explores the concept of narrative, applying music to his loves of literature, drama, and film. Equally at home in concert halls and intimate studio environments, his catalogue includes music for orchestra, choirs of varying sizes, mixed chamber ensembles, solo instruments, and electronics. Stylistically diverse, Evan is particularly active in the worlds of musical theatre and film, always seeking meaningful collaborations. His music has been performed by groups such as HEX Ensemble, The Walden School Players, Apple Hill Chamber Ensemble, and the Contemporary Vocal Ensemble at CalArts. His musical, We Are Here, co-written with his creative partner Socks Whitmore, was premiered at CalArts in February 2019. Recent credits include additional orchestrations for StarKid: Homecoming, work that received praise from Darren Criss and A.J Holmes, and the score for the podcast Georgie Romero is Done For. Upcoming projects include orchestrations for the musical Rough Notes, currently in development in New Brunswick, additional arrangements for the upcoming musical Virtuoso, and a new musical called South Pole Station, based on the novel by Ashley Shelby. Evan is an alumnus of The Walden School, a summer program for young composers in Dublin, New Hampshire. He recently graduated with his BFA in Composition from the California Institute of the Arts.
